We used our usual sponge cake recipe see below:
375g Self raising flour
175g Plain flour
375g butter
375g caster sugar
4 eggs
40ml milk
40ml milk
Mix the butter and sugar together then add the eggs (one at a time) and the flour and milk gradually.
Separate the mixture into 4 equal quantities and add varying amounts of food colouring to get the 'ombre' colour effect. Bake for approx 20-25 mins.

Once cooled, put the cake with the least colouring on the bottom and add a layer of buttercream icing, add the cakes in order of colour and add your favoured icing accordingly.
